Sexual Harassment

Avoid Your Own Dov Charney Sexual Harassment Situation With eLearning

In today’s modern workforce, the use of in-person corporate training has become a hassle to coordinate with everyone’s busy lives and schedules, but the importance of such training has only increased. Although ensuring your employees are compliant with all relevant laws and regulations won’t guarantee your company and workers are safe from workplace accidents or harassment, the insurance of such training can protect from costly lawsuits.

With the continued rise in importance of corporate training, the elearning industry has grown as an alternative and more flexible corporate training tool companies can use to ensure their employees are compliant. Employees can complete the training at whatever time and location is most convenient for them, which eliminates the need for in-person training.

The Case

On Wednesday June 19th, the American Apparel board announced they have moved to fire founder and CEO Dov Charney and remove him from his position as chairman of the board following a 30-day cure period. Charney is known to be a controversial figure due to his racey advertisements and wealth of sexual harassment and misconduct lawsuits against him. The decision to remove Charney from the company arose from “an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct,” although details regarding the report are still unclear.

“We take no joy in this, but the Board felt it was the right thing to do,” Allan Mayer, American Apparel lead independent director and board member, said in a press release Wednesday, “Dov Charney created American Apparel, but the Company has grown much larger than any one individual and we are confident that its greatest days are still ahead.”

How eLearning Can Help

Misconduct and sexual harassment cases can take place anywhere and affect all levels of a workforce; it is extremely important to make sure your company is compliant, especially in states like California where AB1825 requires managers to receive sexual harassment and misconduct training. Even though harassment training is important and even required in some states, the hassle of scheduling in-person training can lead to delays which, in the case of former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, can lead to lawsuits and job loss.

Here’s where elearning comes into play. Instead of having to coordinate with a live trainer, workers can take the training course at any time and from any location, making the training perfect for busy, on-the-go people. By eliminating the need for onsite training, elearning makes corporate training more accessible, and the reduced training costs of elearning courses can save companies money.
