The Fourth of July is the perfect time to relax and celebrate with friends and family, but given the risks posed by the use of fireworks and the hot, dry summer weather, it’s also an important day to remember essential fire safety tips. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are more reported fires on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year, and fireworks account for 2 out of every 5 of those fires. If you’ll be using fireworks this Saturday then check out one of our fire safety training courses. We’ve rounded up a few safety tips to keep in mind as you celebrate Independence Day:
1. Be sure to obey all local and state laws for firework usage
2. Know which fireworks are legal in your state
3. Read all caution labels and instructions thoroughly before lighting
4. Light only one firework at a time and never try to relight a “dud” (wait 20 minutes and soak the ineffective firework in cold water)
5. Never give a firework to a child and make sure responsible adults supervise all firework activities
6. Make sure spectators stay at least 25 feet away from all lit fireworks
7. Always wear protective eyewear when lighting fireworks
8. Remember that the U.S. Forest Service declares all fireworks illegal on public land (including camp sites and national forests)
9. Always keep a supply of water or fire extinguisher close by and ready to use
10. Never throw or point a firework at another person, animal, vehicle, structure, or flammable material
